The Craft: How This Thangka Is Made

Each thangka begins with a hand-stretched cotton canvas, primed and polished by hand. The artist sketches the deity using traditional iconographic grids passed down for generations, then applies ground mineral pigments layer by layer over several weeks. Fine gold detailing is added last — the final step that brings the painting to life. Depending on size and complexity, a single piece takes 3 to 12 weeks of full-time work to complete.

Shipping, Customs & Delivery

Every thangka is rolled in acid-free tissue, sealed in a protective tube, and shipped fully insured with tracking. U.S. orders: all import duties are prepaid by us — the price you see is the price you pay, with no surprise customs fees at delivery. Typical delivery time is 7–12 business days. You will receive tracking within 48 hours of dispatch.

Care & Display

Display your thangka away from direct sunlight and humidity. Mineral pigments are remarkably stable — monastery thangkas painted with the same materials remain vivid after centuries. Dust gently with a soft dry brush. For framing, we recommend UV-protective glass; a traditional silk brocade mount is also available on request.

Common Questions

Is this really hand-painted, not a print?

Yes. Every piece is painted entirely by hand with mineral pigments and gold detail. Under magnification you can see individual brushstrokes — something no print can reproduce. Each thangka ships with a signed Certificate of Authenticity naming the artist.

Will I have to pay customs fees in the U.S.?

No. We prepay all U.S. import duties — the checkout price is final. Your thangka arrives with nothing extra to pay at the door.

How long does delivery take?

Orders ship within 2–3 business days in a sealed protective tube, fully insured and tracked. Typical U.S. delivery is 7–12 business days.

What if it arrives damaged or I change my mind?

Every shipment is insured. If anything arrives damaged, we replace or refund it in full. Returns are accepted within 30 days — contact us and we’ll take care of it.

Do I need to be Buddhist to own a thangka?

Not at all. Many collectors are drawn to thangka purely as fine art — a centuries-old painting tradition recognized by UNESCO. Others use it as a focal point for meditation. Both are honored ways to live with this art.
